Our path to
We have set ourselves clear and ambitious
goals for climate protection. We aim to achieve them through:
Avoidance means foresight. That means preventing emissions in the first place. We are already gradually switching to renewable energy sources such as wind and solar power. After all, the best emissions are those that are not produced in the first place.
Where emissions cannot be completely avoided, the aim is to at least reduce them as much as possible. Reduction often starts on a small scale. For example, we have long since converted our lighting in production and administration to LED. 1. Our employees who travel to work by public transport will have their ticket refunded.
Unfortunately, not all emissions can be entirely avoided or reduced. That is why we offset the remaining emissions (Scope 1, 3 and influenceable) with Gold Standard climate certificates, such as those we generate on our own climate-positive El Cacao cocoa farm.
We have set ourselves clear and ambitious goals for climate protection. We aim to achieve them through:
However, we did not just embark on our path towards climate neutrality yesterday. More than 20 years ago, we were already focussing exclusively on green electricity and even today we continue to set ourselves new goals.
¹ By compensating unavoidable emissions (Scope 1, 2 and 3 influenceable) with Gold Standard climate certificates.
2002
We started to use exclusively green electricity from renewable energy sources.
2012
A climate-positive cocoa farm was established in the
form of our farm
El Cacao.
2019
Our production was climate neutral¹
(Scope 1+2).
2022
We joined the Science-Based Targets Initiative and tightened our climate goals.
2030
42% reduction of our emissions in accordance with SBTi
2002
Our first combined heat and power unit went into operation.
2015
We introduced
our Energy Management policy.
2020
We are a climate-neutral company1 (Scope 1, 2 and 3 influenceable).
2023
Our new energy concept was launched covering half of our electricity requirements with self-generated energy from renewable sources.

…we have already achieved a lot. We have had climate-neutral production¹ since 2019 and have been able to call ourselves a climate-neutral company¹ in terms of our balance sheet since 2020.
Offsetting can merely be a means to an end. It is more important to prevent emissions from occurring in the first place or to avoid them entirely – for example through decarbonisation. That is why we have set ourselves another very ambitious goal and joined the Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi). A scientific basis was used to calculate the emissions reduction we need to achieve the United Nations’ 1.5-degree target, to which we are expressly committed. As a result, we have committed to reducing our emissions by 42% by 2030.

BUT ESPECIALLY GREEN
Our diversity by no means ends with
chocolate. We also obtain our green energy from a variety of sources.

E-MOBILITY
We have electrified our internal logistics between the raw and packaging material warehouse, production, and the logistics centre. In this way, we save 500 tonnes of CO2 per year, which corresponds to the average annual electricity consumption of 250 households*. Charging is via green electricity from our own photovoltaic system.
*Calculated with the electricity consumption of a 4-person household; see co2online.de

Our very own climate protection project:
EL CACAO
By reforesting over one million cocoa trees and 30,000 shade trees, we have created a climate-positive cocoa cultivation that is recognised by the Gold Standard as a climate protection project.
